Te mapa
Pirenópolis was founded in the 1720s during the gold rush in the interior of Goiás, and its historic centre still follows the layout of a colonial mining settlement. From above, narrow streets bend with the terrain and gather around churches and small squares, forming an irregular core quite unlike the planned grids of Brasília and Goiânia, the two capitals that lie within driving distance.
The Rio das Almas runs past the old town, and its crossing is one of the defining points of the map. Around the centre the streets loosen into later neighbourhoods, then give way to rugged, wooded country leading up to the Serra dos Pireneus. That surrounding landscape of ridges, streams and waterfalls is a large part of why visitors come.
The town is widely known for its Festa do Divino, with the costumed horseback Cavalhadas, and for the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Rosário, rebuilt after a fire in 2002. A Pirenópolis map poster shows the structure underneath all of that: a compact colonial core, a river and the hills that enclose them.
The historic centre, protected as national heritage, is a dense cluster of short, winding streets whose irregular pattern reflects the town's origins as a gold-mining settlement.
The river curves along the edge of the old town, and its crossing marks the transition between the historic streets and the neighbourhoods on the far bank.
Beyond the built-up area the map turns into hill country, the range that gives the town its name and holds the streams and waterfalls around it.

Koteā ko Pirenópolis
Many people know Pirenópolis from weekends away, festival visits or a first trip into the Cerrado. A map of its old streets is a restrained souvenir, one that recalls the place through its layout rather than a postcard view.
