Poros Map Poster & Print
Poros is made of two parts. Sphairia is a small, rounded volcanic island that holds the town. Kalavria is larger, hilly and pine-covered, and makes up most of the island. They are joined by a narrow neck crossed by a small bridge. On the map, the town's lanes climb the slopes of Sphairia, and its waterfront faces the mainland town of Galatas across a very narrow channel.
The channel is so narrow that small boats cross it all day long, and the water between the two towns looks more like a river than a sea. On Kalavria are the remains of an ancient sanctuary of Poseidon, where, according to tradition, the orator Demosthenes died. A clock tower above the town is the best-known landmark in the harbour.
