Te mapa
Porvoo is one of the oldest towns in Finland, about fifty kilometres east of Helsinki, where the Porvoo river flows south into a bay of the Gulf of Finland. On a map the river is the defining line, a broad ribbon that separates the old town from the newer districts on the opposite shore, crossed by a small number of bridges.
Old Porvoo shows up as a tangle of narrow, curving lanes climbing a hill toward the cathedral, a medieval street pattern that survived when straighter plans were laid out elsewhere. The contrast is plain from above: irregular, tightly packed streets by the water, and more regular blocks added beside them in later centuries as the town grew.
The cathedral is where Alexander I opened the Diet of Porvoo in 1809, an early step toward Finnish autonomy, and the poet J. L. Runeberg spent his later years in the town. A Porvoo map poster keeps the geography that framed all of it: the river, the bridges, the old hill and the islands that begin to scatter as the bay opens south.
The row of red storehouses along the riverbank is Porvoo's best-known view. On the map their narrow footprints line the water like a comb, facing the opposite shore.
Around the cathedral hill, lanes curve and branch without any grid, forming a dense, hand-drawn texture that is instantly different from the rest of the town.
South of the centre the river widens into a bay, and the coastline breaks into inlets, points and islands, giving the lower part of the print a looser, watery character.

Porvoo is a favourite day trip from Helsinki and a lasting memory for many visitors, and for those who live there it is simply home. The river curving through the frame gives the poster a strong, calm composition that suits a bedroom or a reading corner.
