Te mapa
Priozërsk lies on the western shore of Lake Ladoga, Europe's largest lake, where the Vuoksi river reaches it through a maze of channels and islands. From above, the town looks broken into pieces by water. Neighbourhoods sit on peninsulas and islands joined by bridges, and the shoreline folds in and out through bays, straits and reed beds.
The town has changed hands many times, and its names show that past: Korela in medieval Novgorod, Kexholm under Swedish rule, and Käkisalmi as part of Finland until the mid-twentieth century. The Korela fortress still stands on an island in the river, a compact stone shape at the heart of the map. Around it, a regular grid of streets goes back to the town's later planning.
A Priozërsk map poster is mostly about the balance between land and water. Few towns this size have such a complex outline, with the open expanse of Ladoga on one side and the island-strewn Vuoksi on the other. In Noir or Blueprint, the channels read like a detailed engraving.
The medieval fortress stands on an island in the Vuoksi, surrounded by water. It is the oldest shape on the map and the town's historic anchor.
The river splits into several arms before reaching Ladoga. Those arms carve the town into islands and peninsulas joined by short bridges.
To the east the map opens onto the enormous lake. Its broken coast of bays and skerries fades into a wide field of empty water.
