Te mapa
Qal‘at Şāliḩ is a town in Maysan province in southern Iraq, on the Tigris river south of Amarah. The river is the defining feature of its shape: the town lies along the bank, with streets following the curve of the water and roads leading away towards villages and farmland. From above, the Tigris forms a broad, winding line that dominates the frame.
The surrounding land is flat, crossed by irrigation channels and dotted with palm groves and fields. To the east lie the edges of the Mesopotamian marshes, a landscape of water and reeds that has shaped life in this region for thousands of years. The town has historically been home to a diverse population, including Mandaean communities.
A Qal‘at Şāliḩ map poster places the river at the centre of the composition, with the streets gathered along its bank and the channels of the surrounding farmland fanning out. The contrast between water and built area is simple and strong. It is a map for people who carry memories of this part of southern Iraq.
The river curves past the town, forming the strongest line on the map and explaining why the settlement spreads along its bank rather than inland.
Canals and ditches cross the flat land around the town, feeding fields and palm groves and adding fine lines to the edges of the composition.
The region lies near the Mesopotamian marshes, and the watery landscape to the east hints at one of the oldest inhabited environments in the world.
