Te mapa
Qaraqash, also known as Moyu, lies in the Hotan oasis in southern Xinjiang, on the western side of the Karakax River. Everything on its map depends on water. Irrigated farmland and straight rural roads form a dense patch at the foot of the Kunlun Mountains, while to the north the land gives way to the sand of the Taklamakan Desert.
The Karakax, whose name means black jade in Uyghur, has long been known for the jade stones washed down from the mountains, and together with its neighbour, the Yurungkax, it has sustained settlement here for centuries. The town sits close to Hotan city, and together they form one of the main population centres of the southern Silk Road.
A Qaraqash map poster shows an unusual pattern: a compact town centre surrounded by a regular mesh of irrigation channels, field plots and straight rural roads, all bordered by the smooth emptiness of the desert. It is a striking image of how people shape land where water is scarce, and a fine piece for anyone who knows the oasis first-hand.
The broad, braided riverbed runs north past the town, a wide band on the map that separates it from Hotan and feeds the canals that water the oasis.
Around the town a fine network of canals and field boundaries divides the land into small rectangular plots, producing a dense, even texture typical of Xinjiang's oases.
Where irrigation ends, the map abruptly empties into the sand of the Taklamakan, giving the settlement a sharp, clearly defined outline.

Koteā ko Qaraqash
An oasis map explains its place at a glance: water, fields, town and desert in a single view. For people from Qaraqash, or travellers who followed the southern Silk Road, it is a quiet and meaningful image to live with.
Change the title and subtitle to anything you like, add a date, and personalise the coordinates line. Sand is a natural match for the desert setting, though Classic black & white, Noir, Paper and Blueprint are equally available, as $9 files or a printed poster.
