Querência Map Poster & Print
Querência is a young municipality in north-eastern Mato Grosso, founded during the agricultural settlement of the Brazilian interior in the late twentieth century. Many of its first settlers came from the south of Brazil. The name is a southern word for the place where one belongs, a fitting choice for people who travelled far to build a new town.
Like many towns of the agricultural frontier, Querência follows a planned layout, and the result is visible from above. Straight streets form rectangular blocks, and wide avenues cross the centre. Around the town the land is divided into enormous fields of soy and other crops, and their boundaries form a second, larger geometry.
The municipality also borders the Xingu Indigenous Park, where forest and the rivers of the upper Xingu basin take over from farmland.
