Rahway sits in Union County, south of Newark, and its map is shaped by two lines: the Rahway River and the railroad. The river curves through the town in a series of loose bends, bordered by parkland along much of its course, while the Northeast Corridor cuts straight across the centre, a hard line through the softer pattern around it.
The station marks the point where the North Jersey Coast Line branches off toward the Shore, and the downtown streets gather around it in a compact grid. Beyond the centre, residential neighbourhoods fill the land in regular blocks, with older houses near the river and more suburban patterns toward the edges of town.
Industry has long played a part here. The pharmaceutical company Merck has had a large research and manufacturing campus in Rahway since the early twentieth century, and it appears on the map as a large block of buildings and roads.
