Remagen sits on the left bank of the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate, south of Bonn. Its map is a long, narrow strip. The town follows the river, with a riverside promenade, a compact old centre and streets climbing the wooded slopes behind. The railway and the main road run parallel to the water and strengthen the linear shape of the place.
Remagen is best known for the Ludendorff Bridge, which American troops captured in March 1945 and which collapsed days later. Its surviving towers on the Remagen side now house a peace museum. The neo-Gothic Apollinaris Church stands on a hill above the town, and the Arp Museum at Rolandseck, part of Remagen, adds a modern landmark.
A Remagen map poster makes the most of the Rhine as a strong central element. The river divides the composition, with the town's dense streets on one bank and the hills and villages of the opposite shore on the other. The bridge towers appear as small but meaningful marks on either side of the water.
The remains of the Ludendorff Bridge stand on both banks of the Rhine. They are small but significant marks where one of the war's best-known crossings once stood.
A long promenade follows the Rhine along the edge of town, drawing a clean, continuous line between the streets and the broad river.
Behind the centre, roads climb and bend across wooded slopes. They add curved lines and green spaces above the more regular riverside blocks.
