Renqiu is a county-level city in Hebei province, set on the wide, level North China Plain between Beijing, Tianjin and Shijiazhuang. It is best known as the base of the Huabei Oilfield, one of China's significant oil-producing areas. That industry shaped the city's growth, with large compounds and wide roads laid out across farmland.
Seen from above, the plain gives the city little reason to bend. Avenues run straight and meet at right angles, and blocks are broad and regular. Residential districts sit next to industrial and administrative zones. Beyond the edges, fields continue in a patchwork of rectangles, cut by irrigation channels and rural roads.
