Retalhuleu is the capital of the department of the same name, in the warm Pacific lowlands of south-western Guatemala. The land here slopes gently from the volcanic highlands toward the ocean, and the town stands among farmland and plantations on this coastal plain.
From above, Retalhuleu shows a classic Spanish colonial layout: a regular grid of streets around a central plaza with its church and public buildings. Newer neighbourhoods extend the grid outward along the main roads, and small rivers and streams cut across the surrounding land on their way to the coast.
