Te mapa
Rhondda is made up of two valleys in South Wales, Rhondda Fawr and Rhondda Fach, cut deep into the uplands north-west of Cardiff. From above, the pattern is unmistakable. Long, narrow ribbons of terraced streets follow the valley floors and lower slopes, while the hillsides above stay open and largely empty.
The Rhondda grew rapidly in the nineteenth century as one of the great coal-mining areas of the world. Towns and villages ran into one another along the valleys, with terraces stepped up the slopes to house the mining workforce. The last deep mines have closed, but the street pattern still records that industrial history in every line.
A Rhondda map poster is shaped by geography as much as by planning. The two valleys join at their southern end, forming a distinctive Y of settlement between bare hills. In black and white, the narrow bands of terraced streets stand out sharply, a portrait of communities built along the rivers.
Rhondda Fawr and Rhondda Fach run side by side and meet near Porth, giving the settlement pattern a clear branching shape on the map.
Long rows of terraced houses follow the valley floors and climb the lower slopes, forming dense parallel lines along each river.
Steep, largely unbuilt hillsides separate the valleys, so the map shows wide empty spaces between the narrow bands of streets.

Koteā ko Rhondda
For people with Rhondda roots, a map of the valleys says a great deal about family, work and community. The long terraces between the hills make a striking print for anyone who knows the place.
