Cheltenham Map Poster & Print
Cheltenham grew from a small market town into a fashionable spa after mineral springs were found in the eighteenth century. Its map still shows that planned growth. Crescents, squares and terraces sit among large gardens, and the tree-lined Promenade runs south from the old High Street. The street pattern loosens and curves wherever speculators laid out estates around a spa or pump room.
Montpellier and Pittville are the two clearest examples. Pittville's park and lake spread across the north of town, with the Pump Room at the top. Montpellier's streets bend around shops and gardens in the south. Out to the east, the land starts to rise toward the steep edge of the Cotswolds. Leckhampton Hill is the high ground just beyond the southern suburbs.
The town is known well beyond Gloucestershire for the March racing festival at Prestbury Park, and for the circular GCHQ building on the western side, nicknamed the doughnut. Pittville Park
A large green space with lakes spreads across the north of town, with the Pump Room at the top. In monochrome its winding paths contrast with the straighter surrounding streets.
The doughnut
The GCHQ building shows up in the western suburbs as a near-perfect ring. It is one of the most unusual shapes on any English town plan and instantly recognisable from above.
