Riesa lies on the Elbe in Saxony, between Dresden and Torgau. The river curves along the town's edge, and on a map it is the dominant feature, a wide, smooth band with the bridge crossings and port basins cut into the bank. The town centre and residential districts extend inland in a mix of older streets and planned post-war blocks.
The town grew as an industrial and transport hub, with river shipping, railways and a long history of steel production. It is also known across Germany for its pasta factory, one of the country's best-known noodle makers. In recent decades Riesa has developed a reputation for hosting sports events in its arena.
