Ronda stands on a rocky plateau in the mountains of Málaga province, and its map is defined by a single dramatic feature. The El Tajo gorge, cut by the Guadalevín river, splits the town in two. On one side is the older quarter known as La Ciudad, with narrow, winding lanes from its Moorish past. On the other is El Mercadillo, which is more regular and was mostly built later.
The Puente Nuevo spans the gorge between the two, completed in the late eighteenth century and now one of the most photographed bridges in Spain. Ronda is also home to one of the oldest bullrings in the country and has a strong association with the history of modern bullfighting. Writers including Hemingway and Rilke spent time here.

Puente Nuevo
The bridge joins La Ciudad and El Mercadillo across the gorge. On the map it's a short line with an outsized role, the town's single most important link.
