Rovereto lies in Trentino in northern Italy, in the Vallagarina, the stretch of the Adige valley south of Trento. The valley is narrow, with mountains rising on both sides, and the town spreads along the valley floor and up the lower slopes. The Leno river flows through the town to join the Adige, and the historic centre gathers around it.
The town's castle houses the Italian War History Museum, and Rovereto is also home to the MART, a major museum of modern and contemporary art. On a hill above the town hangs the Maria Dolens bell, cast from the metal of cannons and rung every evening in memory of the fallen of all wars.
