Te mapa
's-Gravenzande lies in the Westland of South Holland, a few kilometres from the North Sea coast near Hook of Holland. Its map has three distinct zones. A strip of dunes and beach runs along the sea, the compact town sits in the middle, and around it spreads an almost unbroken field of greenhouses in long rectangles divided by ditches and service roads.
The town received its town rights in the thirteenth century, which makes it one of the oldest in the Westland. Its name refers to the counts of Holland, who kept a residence here. The historic core around the old church keeps the irregular, tightly drawn streets of a medieval settlement, clearly different from the planned residential districts added later.
Greenhouse horticulture has shaped the land around the town since the twentieth century, and from above it forms one of the most geometric patterns in Europe, acres of glass in neat rows. A 's-Gravenzande map poster turns that patchwork into a composition of fine parallel lines, set between the soft edge of the dunes and the older curves of the town centre.
Large glasshouse complexes fill the land around the town in long rectangles separated by ditches. The result is a dense, precise pattern that looks almost like graph paper on the poster.
Along the North Sea, a band of dunes and beach forms a soft, irregular strip, the only part of the map not shaped by straight lines.
The old core around the church keeps its compact, slightly curved streets, a small knot of older lines surrounded by the more regular layout of later districts.

People who grew up among the Westland glasshouses, or who cycle to the beach at 's-Gravenzande every summer, will recognise the pattern instantly. It also works as graphic design for people who have never been there.
