Saint-Leu-la-Forêt lies in the Val-d'Oise, about twenty kilometres north of Paris. It sits on the slopes that rise towards the Montmorency forest, the large wooded massif that gives the town the second part of its name. On a map the streets climb from the lower town, where the railway line to Paris runs, up towards a dark wooded edge along the high ground.
The town has close ties to the Bonaparte family. Louis Bonaparte, King of Holland and brother of Napoleon, owned an estate here, and he is buried in the parish church of Saint-Leu–Saint-Gilles. Today the streets combine an old village core with later suburban houses and gardens. Residential lanes wind along the contours rather than forming a strict grid.
A Saint-Leu-la-Forêt map poster shows the town's position between the capital's northern suburbs and the forest. The railway draws a firm line across the lower part of the frame. Above it, curving streets on the slope give way to the open space of the woods, which makes a balanced and quiet composition.
The wooded massif rises along the town's upper edge. It appears as a broad unbuilt area that frames the streets and gives the town its name.
The parish church in the old centre holds the tomb of Louis Bonaparte, King of Holland and father of Napoleon III. The building sits within the village's original street pattern.
A suburban line runs through the lower town towards Paris. It is a straight line that contrasts with the curving residential streets above it.
