The Salpêtrière is one of the four administrative quarters of the 13th arrondissement of Paris, named after the vast hospital at its heart. The site, on the Left Bank beside the Gare d'Austerlitz, was once a gunpowder works where saltpetre was processed, which gave it its name. In 1656 Louis XIV founded a general hospital here, and the complex has kept growing ever since.
From above, the hospital grounds are a striking piece of urban geometry. Long wings are arranged around courtyards and gardens, and the domed Chapelle Saint-Louis, designed by Libéral Bruant, stands at the centre of the historic buildings. The Boulevard de l'Hôpital and the rail approaches to Austerlitz run around the complex, and the Seine and the Jardin des Plantes lie close by.
A Salpêtrière map poster has particular meaning for the medical world. Today the Pitié-Salpêtrière is one of the largest hospitals in Europe. In the nineteenth century the neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot taught and worked here, making it a founding site of modern neurology. Doctors, nurses and researchers who trained within its walls often want a reminder of the place.
The historic wings enclose a series of courtyards and gardens. They form a formal, symmetrical block that stands apart from the dense Parisian streets around it.
The chapel's dome rises at the centre of the old buildings. Its centralised plan, with chapels arranged around the crossing, shows clearly in the building footprint on the map.
To the north, the station tracks and the river frame the quarter. Bridges cross toward the Right Bank, and the Jardin des Plantes lies close by on the same bank.

Koteā ko Salpêtrière
Medical students, interns and staff who spent long years at the Pitié-Salpêtrière will recognise the shape at once. So will historians of medicine and anyone who lived nearby in the 13th. It is a map of a workplace as much as of a neighbourhood.
