San Cataldo sits in the hills of central Sicily, just west of Caltanissetta, in the island's rolling, wheat-growing interior. It was founded in the early seventeenth century as a planned town, and from above its origins are clear. The historic centre is laid out as a regular grid, unusual among the winding medieval towns of Sicily's hills.
Around the centre, newer neighbourhoods follow the contours of the land, and the edges of town give way to open fields and olive groves. A San Cataldo map poster shows how the straight streets of the planned core meet the curving roads of later growth and the gently sloping countryside.
The town is known for its Holy Week celebrations, among the most notable in Sicily, when processions and traditional figures fill the streets of the centre. The main squares and axes of the grid form the stage for these events. Drawn in black and white, the order of the original plan remains the heart of the composition.

The main streets and squares host the town's well-known Easter processions. On the map they form the principal axes running through the old centre.
Fields and groves surround the town on gently sloping land. The open countryside frames the dense urban core and leads the eye toward Caltanissetta.
