Sānchor lies in the Jalore district of Rajasthan, near the border with Gujarat and on the edge of the Thar Desert. On the map, the old town has a dense core of narrow lanes and closely packed buildings. Newer areas spread along the main roads, and the landscape beyond opens into flat, sandy country.
In recent years, water from the Narmada canal network has reached this corner of Rajasthan and changed farming in the area. On the map, canals and distributaries run in long, straight lines across the plain, dividing the land into fields. They contrast sharply with the irregular, organically grown streets of the town.
