Te mapa
Sangmélima is the main town of the Dja-et-Lobo department in Cameroon's South Region, in the equatorial forest belt. The town spreads across a series of low hills, and its map shows roads running along ridges and dipping into small valleys, with streams and patches of wetland in between. The centre is compact, and residential quarters extend along the main routes.
Around the town, the forest is broken by clearings for farms and villages, and the road network thins into long lines that connect settlements through the trees. On a Sangmélima map poster this appears as a dense core with a few strong arms reaching outward, framed by wide open space that stands for the surrounding woodland.
This is the home region of Cameroon's long-serving president, Paul Biya, who was born in a nearby village. The department also includes part of the Dja Faunal Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site. For people from the town, the map is simply home: the market, the neighbourhoods and the roads out to family villages.
Streets follow the crests of low hills and drop into the valleys between them, producing curved, irregular blocks instead of a planned grid.
Small streams and wet lowlands run between the neighbourhoods, leaving gaps in the street pattern that give the poster natural breaks and a sense of relief.
Main routes leave the town in several directions and run long distances through the forest. Toward the edges of the frame they appear as strong single lines.
