Te mapa
Sanniquellie lies in northern Liberia, not far from the borders with Guinea and Côte d'Ivoire. From above, the town has an irregular layout. Its roads follow the contours of the gently hilly land instead of a fixed grid, and the buildings form clusters along the main routes. Dense green country surrounds the settlement, and it comes up close to its edges.
The town is the capital of Nimba County. In 1959 it hosted the Sanniquellie Conference, where the leaders of Liberia, Guinea and Ghana met to discuss African unity. That meeting is often mentioned as an early step on the path towards the Organisation of African Unity.
A Sanniquellie map poster has an organic look. The winding roads and loose clusters form a composition that feels hand-drawn rather than planned. It is a quiet, understated print for a place with a significant place in regional history.
Streets curve with the terrain instead of running straight. The result is a relaxed, flowing pattern that sets the town apart from grid-planned cities.
As the capital of Nimba County, the town is where several regional roads meet. On the map you can see these routes converging on the centre.
Forest and farmland close in around the built-up area. On the poster they appear as wide open space that frames the town.
