Te mapa
Santo Amaro lies in the Recôncavo Baiano, the fertile lowland around the Bay of All Saints, not far inland from Salvador. The Subaé river runs through the town, and on a map its winding course divides the streets into sections joined by small crossings. The historic centre has irregular lanes and squares typical of colonial Brazilian towns.
For centuries the region was a centre of sugar production, and the town's churches and older buildings date from that period. Santo Amaro is also known as the birthplace of Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethânia, and it keeps strong Afro-Brazilian traditions, including its celebrations of the abolition of slavery each May.
A Santo Amaro map poster reflects both the river and the colonial plan: winding water at the centre, a dense tangle of old streets on its banks, and roads leading out through the surrounding green lowland toward the bay and neighbouring towns.
The river curves through the middle of the town, drawn as a meandering line that shapes the street pattern on either bank.
The historic core has irregular streets and open squares that reflect its colonial origins, contrasting with the straighter roads of later districts.
Roads leave the town across the lowland of the Recôncavo, a landscape long shaped by sugar farming, leading toward the Bay of All Saints.

Koteā ko Santo Amaro
Santo Amaro means a great deal to people from Bahia and to admirers of Brazilian music. A map of the town connects that culture to a real place, with its river and old streets.
