Santutxu Map Poster & Print
Santutxu is a neighbourhood of Bilbao in the Begoña district, on the slopes that rise east of the Casco Viejo. It is one of the most densely built parts of the city. On a map it reads as a tight cluster of apartment blocks and streets crowded onto uneven ground, and the pattern bends and steps to cope with the slope.
Much of the neighbourhood grew quickly in the mid-twentieth century, when Bilbao's industry drew workers from across Spain, and the density of that period is still clear from above. Today it has its own metro station and sits a short way uphill from the Nervión, the river that runs through the heart of Bilbao.
