Te mapa
Sawankhalok lies on the Yom River in Sukhothai Province, northern-central Thailand. On a map, the river is the main feature, running through the flat valley in a series of lazy bends. The town's streets line its banks and stretch back into the surrounding rice fields in a compact, roughly rectangular pattern.
The name is widely known because of Sawankhalok ware, the glazed stoneware, including celadon, produced in kilns in this area and exported across Southeast Asia centuries ago. Upriver lies Si Satchanalai, the historic twin city of Sukhothai, which forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town also sits at the end of a railway branch line.
A Sawankhalok map poster shows a small town, a winding river, bridges and rice fields. It is a quiet composition, suited to a place whose significance comes less from its size than from the craft and history associated with its name.
The river meanders through the valley and past the town, a smooth curving line crossed by bridges that tie both banks together.
A branch railway line ends in Sawankhalok, its track entering the town as a straight line through the surrounding fields.
Beyond the town's compact streets, flat paddy land extends outward, leaving generous open space around the centre.
