Te mapa
Sawara, now part of Katori City in Chiba Prefecture, grew as a river-trade town on waterways connected to the Tone River. Its historic core is laid out along the Ono River, which runs through the centre as a narrow, canal-like channel. From above, the oldest blocks line up tightly along both banks, with small bridges stitching them together every few hundred metres.
The town is known for preserved merchant houses and storehouses from the Edo period onwards. It also has a strong mapping connection: Inō Tadataka, who produced the first survey-based map of Japan, lived here as a merchant before starting his survey work. His former house still stands by the water.
A Sawara map poster suits the town's modest scale. The canal forms a thin, elegant line and the old streets cluster around it. Outside the centre, the pattern opens into the regular divisions of paddy fields on the low plain.

The surveyor who first mapped Japan's coastline systematically lived in Sawara. That history makes a map of the town especially fitting.
Beyond the old core, flat rice fields near the Tone River create a pattern of long rectangles and straight field roads that frames the town.

Koteā ko Sawara
Sawara appeals to people who like old towns, canals and cartography. A poster of the town where one of Japan's great mapmakers lived has a quiet logic to it. It also makes a thoughtful reminder of a day trip from Tokyo or Narita.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a travel date or a name in Japanese. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the surveying history particularly well.
