Te mapa
Sayō is a small town in the hills of western Hyōgo Prefecture, close to the borders of Okayama and Tottori. The map is mostly forest. Steep, wooded ridges fill the sheet, and settlement keeps to the valley floors. Roads, a railway and houses follow the course of the Sayo River and its tributaries, so the town looks like a set of thin branches.
Where two valleys meet, the ground opens a little. There the town centre spreads into a small grid of streets, with the station, public buildings and paddy fields on the flat land. Elsewhere, hamlets sit in a line wherever the valley is wide enough. Mountain roads climb out along side streams and fade into the contour-free white of the woods.
This part of Hyōgo was crossed by old routes toward the Sea of Japan coast. Hirafuku, a former post town along the river, is still known for its row of traditional buildings facing the water. A Sayō map poster captures that pattern: a narrow thread of human space held inside a much larger body of hills.
The river runs through the town from north to south. Roads, rail and buildings stay close to it, so its winding line organises the whole composition.
The historic post town of Hirafuku sits on a bend of the river. Its houses face the water in a single tight row, which shows up clearly at street scale.
Most of the municipality is steep woodland with very few roads. On the poster this becomes quiet negative space, and the valley settlements read as fine lines within it.

Koteā ko Sayō
Sayō suits anyone drawn to rural Japan. You might have family roots here, have travelled the valley by train, or simply like maps where the landscape clearly wins over the town. The composition is sparse, organic and restful on a wall.
Add your own title, a subtitle such as a family name, and a date or the coordinates. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper and Sand suit the soft valley lines well.
