Schopfheim lies in the valley of the Wiese, on the southern edge of the Black Forest, not far from Basel and the Swiss border. From above, the town stretches along the valley floor, with its compact historic centre near the river. Newer districts extend along the valley and a little way up the slopes, and forested hills close in on both sides.
The old town keeps a medieval core with a small, irregular street pattern. Local roads and a railway follow the Wiese downstream toward Lörrach and Basel, tying Schopfheim to the tri-border region of Germany, France and Switzerland. Upstream, the valley leads deeper into the Black Forest.
