Te mapa
Schwäbisch Gmünd sits in the narrow Rems valley in eastern Baden-Württemberg, and from above the valley shapes everything. The river and the rail line run east to west through the middle, and the town stretches along them instead of spreading outward. Side valleys cut north and south into the wooded hills, and newer neighbourhoods climb up them in fingers, leaving green ridges between.
The old centre is a tight cluster of irregular lanes around the market square. It is often called the oldest Staufer town, and its Holy Cross Minster, a large Gothic hall church linked to the Parler family of builders, sits at its heart. The town is also known for its long tradition of gold and silver work, which gave it the nickname of a silversmiths' town.
A Schwäbisch Gmünd map poster shows how a medieval core, a river corridor and a ring of steep green edges fit together in one frame. The old town reads as a dense knot of streets. The valley floor carries the long lines of road and railway, and the surrounding hills leave broad pale areas that give the composition room to breathe.
The river, the railway and the main roads run side by side along the valley floor, drawing a strong east–west axis through the whole map.
Around the minster and the market square the streets turn short and irregular, forming a dense medieval core that stands out clearly against the later suburbs.
Housing climbs the side valleys north and south of the river, so the built-up area reaches into the hills in narrow strips separated by woodland.
