Shanghuang lies in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing, where the land rises in long ridges and the roads have to work hard to get anywhere. From above, the town looks like a compact cluster of streets pressed into a valley. The built-up area stretches along the lowest, flattest ground, and the slopes around it stay mostly empty on the map.
