Te mapa
Shanto lies in the highlands of southern Ethiopia, in the Wolaita area not far from the town of Sodo. The surrounding land is hilly and intensively farmed. The town has grown along its main road, with side streets and footpaths spreading out from that spine into a patchwork of fields and homesteads.
The Wolaita highlands are among the most densely settled rural areas in the country. That density shows on the map as a fine mesh of tracks and scattered buildings rather than a sharp edge where the town ends. Small towns like Shanto serve as local centres for trade and transport for the farming communities around them.
A Shanto map poster captures this gradual, organic form. There is no rigid grid, only a main route and the many lines that branch from it, fading gradually into countryside. The result is a delicate print with a texture almost like fabric, quite unlike the plan of a European or American town.
The main road runs through Shanto and organises the town around it. Most buildings and side streets line up along this single strong line.
Footpaths and minor roads spread out from the centre into the farmland. They form a fine, irregular network that gives the map its distinctive texture.
The town sits among green, closely farmed hills. On the map this shows as a gradual thinning of settlement rather than a clear boundary.

Koteā ko Shanto
For people from Shanto and the Wolaita area, including many now living in Addis Ababa or abroad, a map of the town is a personal reminder of home. Its soft, branching lines make an unusual image that rewards a closer look.
