Few cities have a setting as legible from above as Shkodër. The broad lake that shares its name spreads to the west. The Buna river flows out of it toward the Adriatic, the Drin arrives from the east, and the Kir joins from the mountains. The city fills the flat land between these waters, and the hill of Rozafa Castle rises at its southwestern edge.
Shkodër is one of the oldest cities in the region and has long been a cultural centre of northern Albania. Its plan combines a pedestrian-friendly historic core, Ottoman-era quarters and later districts. The flat terrain has made it the country's cycling city. Just outside town, the Mesi Bridge, a long stone Ottoman arch bridge, spans the Kir.
