Valley-floor streets
The built area sits along the flattest available ground. This gives the town a stretched, linear footprint that follows the valley rather than spreading evenly in every direction.

Te mapa
Shunzhou is in Yunnan province in China's southwest, in the high country south-east of Lijiang. The land here is all relief. Ridges rise sharply from narrow valleys, and every settlement has to fit into whatever flat or gently sloping ground the mountains leave.
On a map that constraint shapes everything. Streets gather on the valley floor, and the main roads bend with the contours instead of running straight. Small villages and terraced farmland thread along the slopes and watercourses. In black and white you can almost read the topography from the roads alone, because the lines tighten where the ground narrows and loosen where it opens out.
A Shunzhou map poster is a portrait of a highland place rather than a city, a settlement drawn by the mountains around it. It makes a thoughtful piece for people from the area or for travellers who spent time in this part of Yunnan.
The built area sits along the flattest available ground. This gives the town a stretched, linear footprint that follows the valley rather than spreading evenly in every direction.
The roads out of town wind and double back as they climb. On paper they form long, looping lines that suggest the steep slopes without any shading.
Shunzhou lies in the mountainous north-west of Yunnan, one of China's most rugged provinces. Its map carries the feel of that landscape even at the scale of a single town.

Koteā ko Shunzhou
Mountain towns rarely get their own wall maps, but they often mean a great deal to the people who come from them. This print gives Shunzhou its own frame and shows how the land shaped every street.
