Te mapa
Skopelos lies in the Northern Sporades, between Skiathos and Alonissos. It is long and slightly curved, running north-west to south-east. From above, most of the island is steep, forested land. The coastline is cut into small coves and pebble beaches, especially along the south-west side. The north-east coast is steeper and more exposed.
Skopelos Town sits on a wide bay on the north-east. Its houses are stacked up the slope in a tight pattern of lanes and steps, which shows up as a dense knot on the map. On the western side, Glossa sits on a hill above the port of Loutraki. A single main road connects them along the length of the island. A Skopelos map poster shows the rhythm of this road and the side tracks that run down to the sea.
Small monasteries and churches are scattered across the island. One of them, the chapel of Agios Ioannis on a rock above the sea, became internationally known through the film Mamma Mia. Skopelos is also known for its plums and for a style of cheese pie that is made all over the island.
Whitewashed houses rise from the harbour like an amphitheatre, along lanes too narrow for cars. On the map the town is a compact cluster of fine lines against the bay.
At the western end, a hilltop village and the small port below it form a second focal point, linked by winding roads down the slope.
The south-west coast is scalloped into a sequence of small bays, each reached by a short road branching from the island's main route.

Koteā ko Skopelos
Skopelos is often the island people return to year after year, for its pine forests and slower pace. The map suits anyone who stayed in the harbour town, married in a hillside chapel or spent a summer sailing through the Sporades.
