Te mapa
Socotra lies in the Arabian Sea, off the Horn of Africa, and is the largest island in a small archipelago that belongs to Yemen. From above it is a long east-west shape. Most of its roads and settlements follow the northern coast, where Hadibu, the main town, sits between the sea and the mountains. The interior is limestone plateau and rugged uplands, with few marked routes.
The Haghier Mountains rise in the northeast and reach well over a thousand metres, catching moisture that supports plants found nowhere else. Socotra was separated from the mainland for a very long time, so a large share of its plant species are endemic. The best known is the dragon's blood tree, whose umbrella-shaped crown has become a symbol of the island.
A Socotra map poster is spare by nature: a strong coastline, a few thin roads and large areas of untouched ground. The island was added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2008 for its biodiversity. On paper, the lack of dense infrastructure lets the outline and the terrain speak for themselves, which suits a minimalist black-and-white print.
The granite range in the island's northeast is its highest ground. It shapes the weather and the unusual plant life on the slopes around it.
Most settlements, including Hadibu, are strung along the north shore, so the island's main thin line of roads runs between mountains and sea.
Much of the interior is limestone upland with very few roads, which leaves wide blank spaces on the map and gives the print a calm, airy balance.

Koteā ko Socotra
Few people ever reach Socotra, and those who do tend to remember the journey for a lifetime. A print of its outline is a quiet reminder of a place that feels far from everywhere else, and of the strange trees that grow there.
