Te mapa
Soshanguve lies north of Pretoria in the City of Tshwane. It was established in the 1970s as a township under apartheid, and its name is formed from the first syllables of four groups who were settled there: Sotho, Shangaan, Nguni and Venda. Since then it has grown into one of the largest residential areas in Gauteng.
The township is organised into blocks identified by letters, and from above these appear as distinct patches of small, regular plots, each with its own internal street pattern. Wider roads separate the blocks, and a railway line with several stations links the area to Pretoria. Open ground and informal settlements fill some of the spaces between.
Soshanguve also hosts a campus of the Tshwane University of Technology. A Soshanguve map poster shows the structure that defines daily life there: repeated grids of small houses, the main roads and rail line that connect them, and the flat, open land of the highveld all around.
The township is divided into named blocks, each a patch of closely spaced plots and streets. On the poster they form a patchwork of slightly different grids fitted side by side.
A commuter line runs through the area towards Pretoria, with stations serving several blocks. It appears as a long firm line crossing the residential texture.
Beyond the built-up blocks, open grassland stretches out across the plateau. These empty areas frame the dense street pattern and give the design space to breathe.
