Te mapa
Southfield sits just north of Detroit's Eight Mile Road in Oakland County, Michigan. Like much of the region, it is organised by the mile-road grid. Straight arterial roads cross at one-mile intervals, and residential streets curve and loop inside each square. From above, the pattern is almost diagrammatic.
Freeways break that order. The Lodge Freeway, Interstate 696 and Northwestern Highway cut through the city at angles, and their interchanges form large sculptural shapes on the map. Southfield grew into one of the region's major office centres, and the gold-glass towers of Southfield Town Center are its best-known skyline. A Southfield map poster shows this business core beside quiet neighbourhoods.
The Rouge River and its branches add the only natural lines, winding through parks, golf courses and wooded strips between the streets. In black and white, the poster balances three elements. There is the rigid grid of mile roads, the diagonal sweep of freeways and the loose curves of the river, which together make a very recognisable piece of suburban Detroit.
Arterial roads laid out a mile apart divide the city into large squares, each filled with its own pattern of curving residential streets.
Where the Lodge, I-696 and Northwestern Highway meet, looping ramps and wide corridors create the most dramatic shapes on the map.
Branches of the Rouge River wind through parks and green strips, softening the grid with irregular, flowing lines.
