Te mapa
Modern Sparta was laid out in 1834, soon after Greek independence, on or near the site of the ancient city. That origin shows clearly on the map. Wide, straight streets form a regular grid, with a large central square and long avenues. It is one of the most orderly town plans in the Peloponnese.
The town sits in the fertile valley of the Eurotas river, which runs along its eastern side. To the west the Taygetus mountains rise steeply. North of the modern grid, the remains of the ancient acropolis and theatre sit among olive groves, and the Byzantine hill town of Mystras lies a few kilometres to the west.
A Sparta map poster links one of the best-known names of the ancient world to a calm, rational street plan. The grid, the river and the edge of the mountains together make a strong and balanced composition.
The modern town was designed with a rigorous grid of broad streets and a central square, a clean geometric pattern that suits a monochrome print.
The Eurotas runs along the eastern side of town through a valley of olive and citrus groves, giving the map a natural curving boundary.
North of the grid lie the remains of ancient Sparta, including its acropolis and theatre, an irregular area that contrasts with the ordered streets.

A map of Sparta speaks to history lovers, travellers who have explored Laconia and families with roots in the region. The clear grid beside the ancient site makes a poster that is both intellectual and decorative.
