Stoughton is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, about twenty miles south of Boston. Its map follows an older New England pattern rather than a grid. Historic roads radiate from a central square, meeting at irregular angles, while newer residential streets fill the spaces between them. Ponds, wetlands and conservation land add open shapes across the town.
The town has a commuter rail station, and the railway line gives the map one of its clearest long lines, connecting Stoughton's centre with Boston. Around the square, blocks are denser and more varied. Toward the edges, the street pattern loosens into looping subdivisions and wooded areas, the typical transition from village to suburban town.
