Te mapa
Sukhothai has two faces. The modern town sits on the Yom River, a practical grid of streets and markets on both banks. To the west lies the old city, the capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, which is often described as the first Thai kingdom and credited with the early development of the Thai script.
The old city is now Sukhothai Historical Park, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1991. On a map it is unmistakable: a near-rectangular walled enclosure with earthen ramparts and moats, temple ruins spread across the interior, and reservoirs and ponds that once formed part of an elaborate water-management system. Wat Mahathat lies near its centre.
A Sukhothai map poster can frame either the river town or the ancient enclosure. Both have a clarity that suits a black-and-white print. The Yom River curves through the new town, while the old capital shows the deliberate geometry of a planned royal city, with straight walls and gates on each side.
The ancient capital is enclosed by ramparts and moats that form a strong, almost rectangular outline, with gates on each side and temple sites set within.
The modern town sits on the Yom River, which winds between the two halves of the town and gives the everyday street grid its main axis.
Inside and around the old city, small bodies of water surround temple islands. They appear on the map as neat shapes scattered among the ruins.
