Estate lanes
Many housing estates each have their own network of short lanes and dead ends. Together they form the dense, branching texture that covers most of the district.

Te mapa
Sai Mai is one of Bangkok's northernmost districts and lies close to Don Mueang. Seen from above, it is very different from the old riverside city. Here the pattern is mostly made of housing estates. Each one has its own set of short lanes and dead ends that branch off a small number of main roads, so the map looks like many separate clusters packed tightly together.
Much of this land was rice paddy and orchard not long ago. It was drained by straight canals, and several of these khlong still cut across the district in long, even lines. They are a reminder of the old farming grid underneath the newer suburbs. Military land and some open plots break up the housing, and main roads lead south toward the centre of Bangkok.
A Sai Mai map poster shows how modern Bangkok grew outward. Each gated estate has its own lane pattern, the canals are ruler-straight, and a few main roads tie everything together. In black and white, the many small cul-de-sacs look almost like leaf veins. For people who live on one of these sois, the map shows where their street sits within the wider suburb.

Canals dug for the old rice fields still run across Sai Mai in long, straight lines. They are the oldest geometry on the map.
Sai Mai lies on Bangkok's upper edge near Don Mueang. At its far side, the city gives way to lower-density land.

Koteā ko Sai Mai
Sai Mai is where many Bangkok families set up home, so a map of it often marks a first house or the place where children grew up. The canals and lanes are as familiar to residents as the main roads.
