Te mapa
Bueng Kum is one of the fifty districts of Bangkok, in the eastern part of the capital. Its map is typical of the city's outer ring. A few main roads carry traffic across the district, and from them branch a great many sois, narrow side lanes that end in cul-de-sacs or wind through housing estates. The result is a fine, branching pattern, more like a tree than a grid.
Water is part of that pattern. Canals, called khlong in Thai, run through the district, remnants of the network that once carried most of Bangkok's traffic. On the map they appear as thin, mostly straight lines that cut across the street pattern. Bueng is also the Thai word for a marsh or pond, and the name recalls the low, wet ground this part of the city was built on.
A Bueng Kum map poster shows the everyday side of Bangkok, away from the river and the old royal quarter. It is a place of homes, schools, markets and short trips down the soi. In a single colour, its thousands of small lanes become an intricate, almost textile-like surface that rewards a closer look.
Side lanes branch from the main roads into housing estates and communities. Together they form the fine, dendritic pattern that fills most of the frame.
Canals cross the district in long, steady lines that ignore the layout of the roads. They are traces of an older water-based city beneath the modern street map.
A handful of wide roads carry the heaviest traffic and divide the district into large sectors. They give the poster its main structure and orientation.
