Te mapa
Sultangazi lies on the European side of Istanbul, toward the northern edge of the metropolis. On a map it is almost entirely built up, a dense web of short, irregular streets covering ridges and valleys. Past its northern edge the city stops fairly abruptly, and open land and forest take over.
Much of the district grew quickly in the late twentieth century, and the street pattern shows it. Lanes follow the slopes and property lines rather than a plan, blocks vary in shape and size, and a few main roads trace the valley floors, linking the neighbourhoods to the rest of Istanbul. Newer housing estates appear as more regular clusters within the older fabric.
Sultangazi became a district of its own in 2008, formed mainly from parts of Gaziosmanpaşa. It is one of Istanbul's most populous districts, a place where many people from across Turkey settled after moving to the city. A Sultangazi map poster shows a side of Istanbul that postcards leave out: residential, hilly and intricately detailed.
Short, winding streets cover the hills in a dense and irregular mesh. At poster scale it looks almost like lace, with very little open space between buildings.
A few main roads follow the valley floors through the district. They form clear curving channels that cut through the finer grain of residential lanes.
Toward the north the dense streets stop and open land begins. The sharp contrast between packed city and empty space gives the composition a strong boundary.

Koteā ko Sultangazi
For families who built their lives in Sultangazi, this is home Istanbul, not tourist Istanbul. A map of the district's own streets is a personal way to mark where a family settled, grew up or first moved to the city.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with a mahalle name or a year. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir handles the dense street web especially well, turning it into fine light lines on dark.
