Te mapa
Sumba sits just south of the main arc of the Lesser Sunda Islands in eastern Indonesia, across a strait from Flores. Compared with its volcanic neighbours, it has a gentler outline. It is a long, solid landmass stretching from northwest to southeast, with a fairly smooth coast and a land surface of rolling hills, limestone plateaus and river valleys running out to the sea.
The largest towns sit at opposite ends. Waingapu is on the northeast coast and Waikabubak is in the western highlands. The main road links the two across the interior. The east is drier and more open, with wide grasslands, while the west is greener and more heavily settled. A Sumba Island map poster shows both halves in a single calm shape.
Sumba is known for its traditional villages. Their houses have tall, pointed thatched roofs, and many villages have stone megalithic tombs. Western Sumba is also home to Pasola, a ritual contest between mounted riders, and the island's horses have long been part of local life and trade.
The main route runs from Waingapu in the east to Waikabubak in the west. It traces a long line through the hilly interior that ties the island together.
The eastern part opens into broad savanna with few settlements. On the map it becomes a wide, quiet surface cut by winding river courses.
The west is more densely settled, with a finer network of roads and villages. This gives the western end a noticeably busier texture.

Koteā ko Sumba Island
The poster is chosen by travellers who have visited the traditional villages, by people with family on the island and by anyone who wants a large, unfamiliar shape on the wall. It feels quieter and less expected than the usual Indonesian destinations.
Title, subtitle and coordinates can all be personalised, for example with the name of a village or the date of a trip. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand works well with the grassland character of the east.
