Te mapa
Sundsvall sits on the coast of Västernorrland in northern Sweden, and its map is framed by terrain. Two hills, Norra Stadsberget and Södra Stadsberget, rise north and south of the centre. The city fills the valley between them before reaching the water of Sundsvallsfjärden, the bay that opens toward the Gulf of Bothnia. The grid in the middle is regular and tight.
That grid has a story. After a major fire destroyed much of the town in 1888, the centre was rebuilt in stone and brick, and the district is still called Stenstaden, the Stone Town. On the map it shows as a neat block pattern of broad streets. It contrasts clearly with the looser residential areas on the slopes and the harbour edges along the bay.
Sundsvall grew wealthy on timber in the nineteenth century, when sawmills lined this coast. A Sundsvall map poster shows how geography still defines the place: the orderly core, the green masses of the two hills, the Selångersån river coming in from the west, and the long shoreline curving out toward the island of Alnön.
The rebuilt centre forms a regular, compact grid of wide streets. It sits at the heart of the map as a crisp rectangle of blocks between the hills.
Norra and Södra Stadsberget flank the centre as large wooded areas with few roads. On the poster they become broad, calm shapes that frame the city.
East of the centre, the bay widens toward the island of Alnön, which is linked to the mainland by a long bridge. The water adds open space and a long, curving coastline.

Koteā ko Sundsvall
Sundsvall appeals to people who like a map with obvious structure: hills, a bay and a planned centre in one frame. It works for residents, for students of Mid Sweden University, and for anyone whose family story is tied to the northern coast.
