Te mapa
Gamla stan is Stockholm's old town. It covers the island of Stadsholmen and a few smaller neighbouring islands at the point where Lake Mälaren flows into Saltsjön, an inlet of the Baltic. On the map, the island forms a rounded shape surrounded by water, with an unusually dense street pattern of narrow lanes, alleys and small squares, most of them medieval in origin.
The Royal Palace dominates the northern part of the island, a large square block facing the water. Near the centre is Stortorget, the oldest square in Stockholm, where the Stockholm Bloodbath took place in 1520. Nearby runs Mårten Trotzigs gränd, the city's narrowest alley, which at its tightest point is less than a metre wide.
Bridges connect Gamla stan to the surrounding districts, and the small island of Riddarholmen sits just to the west. A Gamla stan map poster shows the moment Stockholm began: a tight urban core on a small island, surrounded by open water and newer city on every side.
The old central square sits among the island's densest streets. On the map it is a small open space where lanes converge from all directions.
A large, rectangular block on the northern edge of the island, facing the water. It is the most substantial building on the map.
Water surrounds the island on all sides. Quays and bridges give Gamla stan a clear, self-contained outline between Mälaren and the Baltic.

Koteā ko Gamla stan
For Stockholmers and visitors alike, Gamla stan is where the city's story begins. A map of its lanes and waterfront is a small portrait of the place that shaped the rest of the capital.
Add a title and subtitle, perhaps a wedding date or the year you moved to Stockholm, and edit the coordinates. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint makes the surrounding water especially striking.
