Sand beaches run around much of the coast. On the map this gives the island a smooth, soft-edged outline instead of the ragged shoreline typical of Baltic skerries.

Te mapa
Gotska Sandön lies alone in the Baltic Sea north of Gotland, far enough from the mainland to feel like a separate world. On a map it is a compact, rounded triangle with almost no roads. Long sand beaches trace its edges, and pine forest, heathland and drifting dunes fill the interior. The whole island is protected as a Swedish national park.
The ground is almost entirely sand, laid down after the last ice age, and wind and waves keep reshaping the shoreline. Paths rather than streets cross the forest. They link a few old buildings, a lighthouse and the small landing places used by summer visitors who arrive by boat.
Only a handful of people, mostly park staff, stay on the island through the season, and there is no real settlement. That emptiness is what makes a Gotska Sandön map poster so calm: an unbroken outline, a scatter of footpaths and open sea on every side, all drawn in fine black lines.
Sand beaches run around much of the coast. On the map this gives the island a smooth, soft-edged outline instead of the ragged shoreline typical of Baltic skerries.
Large dune areas, some still shifting, sit within the forest. On the map they show as open patches between the trees, a reminder of how young this island's surface is.
A lighthouse stands near the northern end and marks the island for ships crossing the central Baltic. It is one of the few fixed structures in an otherwise wild landscape.

Koteā ko Gotska Sandön
People who have made the crossing by boat remember the quiet here, the pines and the sand underfoot. A print of this simple shape brings that stillness into a room, and it works well for anyone drawn to national parks and remote coasts.
You can change the title and subtitle to mark a trip or a date, and you can adjust the coordinates line too. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download 300 DPI files for $9 or order a printed poster.
