Island scatter
Dozens of islets and rocks surround Vilsandi. On the map they form a loose constellation of small shapes, so it is difficult to say where the island itself ends.

Te mapa
Vilsandi is a small island off the west coast of Saaremaa in Estonia, at the edge of the open Baltic. It is low and flat, with an irregular outline of shallow bays, spits and points. Around it lies a wide scatter of smaller islets and rocks. From above, the land seems to dissolve gradually into the sea rather than ending at a clean coastline.
The island is the centre of Vilsandi National Park, and its protection as a bird sanctuary dates back to the early twentieth century. It is known as an important place for seabirds and migrating waterfowl. The island has a lighthouse, and it is only lightly populated, with few tracks and scattered farmsteads rather than a village grid.
A Vilsandi map poster is almost entirely coastline and water. There are ragged edges, a spray of islets and only a few faint lines of tracks on the land. It is a quiet composition with a lot of open space. The printed result feels close to a natural pattern, more like a drawing of the Baltic shallows than a conventional map.
Dozens of islets and rocks surround Vilsandi. On the map they form a loose constellation of small shapes, so it is difficult to say where the island itself ends.
The coast is a series of shallow bays, spits and points rather than a smooth line. That gives the outline a fine, broken texture that prints especially well in a minimalist style.
Only a few tracks cross the island, linking farmsteads and the lighthouse. They show up as a small number of delicate lines within an otherwise open landscape.

Koteā ko Vilsandi
Vilsandi appeals to birdwatchers, walkers and anyone who knows the western islands of Estonia. Its broken outline and surrounding islets read almost like an abstract print. It works on a wall where you want something calm and natural, with a real place behind the pattern.
