Saaremaa is Estonia's largest island, off the country's west coast in the Baltic Sea. It is low and wide, with a coastline broken into bays, small peninsulas and scattered islets. In the south, the Sõrve peninsula narrows into a long finger of land pointing toward Latvia. In the east, a causeway links Saaremaa to neighbouring Muhu, and ferries connect Muhu to the mainland.
Kuressaare, the island's only town, sits on the south coast. At its heart is a well-preserved medieval episcopal castle with a square plan, surrounded by moats and bastions that show clearly from above. Most of the rest of the island is farmland, juniper heath and forest, crossed by quiet roads connecting small villages.
